V-Ray by Chaos Group License Options Explained

V-Ray by Chaos Group offers two license options – Perpetual and Rental

V-Ray Perpetual License

A perpetual license option does not expire. When you purchase a V-Ray license, you own the license forever. The version that you purchase is the version you will receive including any new minor versions/service packs. Minor updates include service packs and bug fixes denoted by an increment to the right side of the decimal point in the version number, such as 3.1 or 3.7. You will receive access to these minor updates and service packs at no additional charge.

When a new major version is released, there is an upgrade fee. This fee is significantly less than your initial perpetual license purchase. Chaos Group usually releases major new versions every 24 months, and they include significant new features and additional functionality. Upgrades are optional and not mandatory.  Chaos Group does reserve the right to end support and download access to any prior version. Make sure to save your V-Ray installer just in case.

V-Ray Rental License

A rental license option is for a specific period of time, by the month or year. With the V-Ray rental license option, any and all upgrades, minor or major, within the term of the license are provided no additional charge. Typically, rental options offer a lower upfront cost but do cost more over time as the charges are recurring if you want to continue to use your license. When you purchase a rental option from vray.us, you are NOT billed automatically. Each purchase requires authorization from the license holder for renewal. Vray.us does offer a recurring billing option if one chooses.

Both of the V-Ray license options listed above allow for a standalone or floating license option. There is no additional charge to install V-Ray as a floating license. There are no functionality differences between a perpetual and rental license.
Chaos Group, the developers of V-Ray, have created a nice graph to show the license options vs cost over 5 years.
