AI presents a wonderful new way to create textures on demand. Using generative AI almost any texture of any style can be synthesized, without shadows or other issues common with photographing your textures. Further, you can finalize the texture in Photoshop using our process to make the texture seamless and tilable!

Here is a step-by-step guide for a process we developed that uses www.tengr.ai (which allows uploaded images as a starting point for generative AI without purchasing a subscription) and then complete the texture using a few steps in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 1: Log into Tengr.ai

First, log into Tengr.ai with a free account. Once you’re in, find a reference texture that you like. Click the "image-easy mode" button to get started.

Step 2: Upload Your Reference Image

You can upload your reference image directly from your machine or use a link from a website. For example, if you want a seamless texture of grass, after adding your reference image simply describe your desired image in Tengr.ai, such as "seamless texture of grass," and hit generate.

Step 3: Generate Variations

Tengr.ai will create four unique 1024x1024px variations based on your reference image. Browse through these options and pick the one you like best.

Step 4: Make Your Texture Seamless

To ensure your new texture is truly seamless, download the image and open it in Photoshop. Use the "Offset" effect found at Filter > Other > Offset. Set both the horizontal and vertical coordinates to 512, which will place the seam in the center of the 1024x1024 image produced by Tengr.ai.

Step 5: Blend the Seams

Select the rectangle marquee tool and create a cross-shaped selection around the seam. It’s okay to be generous with the selection area. Right-click and select "Generative Fill," then type "blend." Photoshop will handle the rest, seamlessly blending the edges.

Now you have a unique and seamless texture, ready for your next big animation project. This method ensures that your textures are both high-quality and tailored to your specific needs.
